Wahine Log Review by Maya Harrison

Check out Maya Harrison’s board review that we posted on our Instagram called @wahinelogreview. But you can also view the full transcript below. Maya highlights the benefit of working with a shaper and digging into the process of fine-tuning details.

Where do you surf?
My favorite spots in southern California are Swamis, churches, Leo Carrillo, and Malibu. I'm regular, so I do prefer a nice right-hand pointbreak, but Saladita in Mexico and pipes are two of my favorite waves as well.

Years of surfing?
I've been surfing for the past 15 years of my life. I started surfing at a young age, and I've been drawn to the water ever since.

Favorite board to surf (length, width, thickness, shaper if possible)
I love riding @dominicpicone surfboards. I usually ride a 9'6 single fin. We made a model together called the Mayan Mezcal Model, and it's perfect for any southern California logger who mainly surfs 2-4 conditions. Getting a custom board isn't as intimidating as it may seem, shapers want to help and support you!

What qualities of the board do you like?

I love the rails on this board, they pig out just a little, meaning that they are a bit wider towards the tail to hold better in the wave when you're up on the nose. We also combined my favorite elements of my last board, which was slightly lighter and narrower, to blend something familiar with a new curiosity.

What type of fin do you prefer with the log?
I use a 9-inch Apocolypse fin that I love!

How well does the board turn, trim, and noseride?
Board noserides excellent, and it trims well. It's a heavy nose rider with a modern twist. I feel comfortable taking this board out in larger surf as well because it's fast and can get me through most sections.

Would you suggest this board for someone who is beginning, intermediate, or already knows how to noseride?
I would recommend this to an intermediate surfer who is wanting to learn how to noseride. I know when you're choosing a board, you may want to jump straight into the nice $2,000 logs, but trust me, if you don't know how to handle that much foam and equipment, don't harm yourself or others in the water. Don't be afraid to start where you are at and your level, this is a lifelong practice! You have time to invest and work your way up to a log!

The best type of conditions for surfing on your favorite log?
2-3 northwest swell at pipes or churches in the fall.

Any other comments about the board?
I would recommend working with a shaper and just saying what you're looking for; they know what they're doing!
