About the Founder
sea together all started when…
I’ve lived in various places, when sometimes I was the only female in the water and had to fight for a place in the lineup in a sea of men. For years, I had an idea to start a “feminist surf zine” that showcased all sorts of women, as well as women who had been left out of the mainstream surf media. Finally in 2017, I came up with a name with the help of an internet friend and a brainstorm session, and “Sea Together” was born.
I started the project not thinking it would be a thing that people gathered around from around the world, but that is what happened. Quickly, I received messages from women around the world saying that they identified with the project and wanted to support it.
I always said if it only inspired one person, it would be worth it do work on the project. A few print magazines, events around the world, workshops both in person and online, surf retreats, art projects, and videos later, and it is currently 2023, and Sea Together has been featured in Outdoor Magazine, U.S. News & World Report, HONEY Magazine Japan, but most of all, it has inspired people around the world to start their own projects and communities globally, and also has taught me a lot about surfing, surf culture, and I have learned about the joy and wisdom from women surfers around the world.
About me…
I grew up between California and Hawai’i moving frequently, and I lived in the Pacific NW for 10 years. I now am back residing on Oahu, but I frequently travel around the world. I am mixed race—White, Black, and Native American, and I grew up with many cultures: New Orleans Creole, Mexican American, and European.
I hold a MFA in Socially Engaged Art, a BA in Art Practices, and I am passionate about bringing people together (when I am not living as a semi-monk in my cave) and facilitating groups of people for Sea Together retreats and workshops. I worked as en environmental educator for 6 years protecting sea birds like Puffins and tide pools. I currently teach art part time at Chaminade University in Hawai’i, and I work on short surf film projects around the world.
More than anything, I love to surf. Sometimes I surf with friends, and sometimes I love to surf alone. I think waves are the most beautiful thing in the world, and I am constantly in awe and reverent of surfing and the ocean, and how sacred they are. I am so grateful for Sea Together and everything it has blessed me with, including many new close friends around the world, some mega learning experiences, and countless inspiration.
